There are about 70 consultants and a senior lecturer in the department. The trainees comprise 9 year 3/4 SpRs, 8 year 1/2 SpRs and 6 SHOs. The theatre complex houses 12 operating theatres (4 cardiac), 4 day surgery theatres and a separate ophthalmic theatre. The large recovery ward also includes a nine bedded overnight intensive recovery facility for many of the postoperative cardiac surgery patients.

There are 42 consultants, 26 SpRs and 6 SHOs. The ICU has 18 beds; in addition there are 10 HDU beds in a purpose built unit. There are separate ICU/HDU facilities in the Liver Unit and the Neurosciences Unit. 60% of the surgical workload is performed in the Day Surgery Unit, the main operating theatre complex consisting of 15 theatres of which two are dedicated to cardiac surgery and three to neurosurgery. Anaesthetic services are also provided for imaging, including MRI scanning. The liver transplant programme is the busiest in Europe. The obstetric unit has 2-3000 deliveries a year with a high proportion of complicated deliveries. There are ongoing research programmes, primarily in pain relief, liver transplantation and cardiac anaesthesia. There are CD ROM facilities in the department.

The department is staffed by 24 consultants, 7 staff grades, 6 SpRs and 9 SHOs. There are 15 operating theatres, a 10 bedded critical care facility including ICU and ITU beds, and an obstetric unit with 3500 deliveries a year. The cardiothoracic centre, which opened last year, treats 750 adult patients per year and has 7 HDU/recovery beds. At the Royal Alexandra Hospital for Sick Children there are 3 paediatric operating theatres and a paediatric ICU.

There is ongoing research in the areas of cardiac anaesthesia and intensive care as well as other clinical projects. The hospital also supports the work of the South Coast Training Group, which currently runs 2 courses; the popular Primary FRCA revision course held in Brighton, and the Training then Trainers course held in Eastbourne.

The Princess Royal University Hospital

This PFI hospital, opened in 2003, replaced Bromley and Farnborough hospitals and some of the services provided by Orpington hospital. There are 6 ITU beds and 4 HDU beds on the Farnborough site. The modern obstetric unit deals with over 3600 deliveries a year. There are 6 main theatres and 6 day case theatres. In addition there are three newly built operating theatres at Orpington hospital with 66 elective beds. Chronic Pain clinics are held at Beckenham Hospital which is currently undergoing major refurbishment.

The department consists of 18 Consultants, 2 associate specialists, 5 staff grades, 5 SpRs (two year 3/4), 9 SHOs and several senior and junior clinical fellows.

The hospital runs an active Postgraduate Centre and the department runs separate Primary and Finals teaching.

The District General Hospital (DGH) was built in two phases. The first opened in 1976, the second in 1989. The hospital occupies a prominent position on one of the main thoroughfares into Eastbourne and has commanding views of the town and its rural locality.

The hospital has 538 beds with all the major clinical specialities represented except cardiothoracic and neurosurgery. The hospital has 8 operating theatres, a 2-theatre Day Surgery Unit and a 9- bedded Critical Care Unit. There is a cardiology department with a 6-bed Coronary Care Unit (CCU), pacing theatres and investigation suite, a Diabetes Centre and separate Urology and Gynaecology investigation suites. There is a state-of-the-art Emergency Unit, with 24-hour helipad; dedicated Medical and Surgical Assessment Units; an Obstetric service with 1800 deliveries per year and an 11-cot Special Care Baby Unit, a refurbished and extended Outpatients department; an on-site MRI and CT suite, comprehensive pathology, pharmacy and radiology departments, and a Private Patients unit.

THE ANAESTHETIC DEPARTMENT
The department employs 18 consultant anaesthetists, 5 NCCGs, 6 SpRs, 1 FTTA and 6 SHOs. A two tier full shift system operates for trainees, providing cover for emergency theatre, critical care and obstetrics. Trainees attend the Hospital at Night meetings and advise members of the Hospital at Night team on patient management. A Critical care outreach and acute pain team are well established in the hospital.

UHL is a busy acute hospital of 640 beds. The department is staffed by 18 Consultants, one Associate Specialist, 8 SpRs and 9 SHOs.

In addition to the usual surgical specialties, we have a large (4000 theatre cases) paediatric surgery service and a share of the regional vascular emergency service. Our acute and chronic pain services are well-developed. Our 8-bedded ITU has a wide case-mix and is well resourced.

The Obstetric Department delivers 3,500 women per year.

Queen Mary’s Hospital has a remarkable history in anaesthesia being the birthplace of endotracheal intubation, introduced by Sir Ivan Magill.
There is a 6 bedded ICU which has an excellent reputation for teaching. The obstetric department deals with over 3000 deliveries per year and takes complex cases. This given excellent experience in epidurals and spinal anaesthesia for sections. The eye department is the largest in the region where trainees can get experience with all ophthalmic local anaesthetic techniques.
In addition to the postgraduate centre with its library and on- line facilities the Magill anaesthetic department enjoys the use of a well equipped seminar room with a good library (available for reference IN the room ) and a CD-ROM with a multiple choice questions programme, plus TV and video , tape and slide projection facilities.

With reorganisation of healthcare in East Kent, it is proposed that the QEQMH expands to provide more of the acute services in the area. There are now 10 Intensive Care Unit beds. Currently the in-patient surgical specialists provided include lower G.I, orthopaedics and trauma, gynaecology, obstetrics.  Additionally, the Day Care Surgery Unit provides ENT, opthalmics and maxillo facial. Acute and chronic pain services are also provided on site.

Kent & Sussex NHS Trust merged with Maidstone Healthcare Trust on 1st April 2000. The Kent and Sussex is affiliated with the South Eastern School as well as the South Coast School of Anaesthesia. There are 7 SHOs, 3 SpR yr 1 (rotating with King's, Guy's/STH, Brighton) and one SpR 3/4 who rotates from King's. There are 6 operating theatres and a 7-bed ITU at the Kent and Sussex Site. On the Pembury site there is an obstetric unit with 3000 deliveries a year, 3 theatres, SCBU and an obstetric HDU. A new paediatric ward opened in Pembury in January 2006 and all elective in-patient work is carried out on this site - ENT ophthalmology, general surgery and urology.

The Kent and Sussex department is staffed by 13 Consultants, 1 associate specialist, 2 part-time staff grades and 7 whole-time staff grades.

William Harvey Hospital is one of East Kent Hospitals, but is still operating very much as a unit. There are 7 operating theatres in the main theatre suite, with a further 3 in the new Day Surgery unit. The ITU has 6 beds and the obstetric unit has between 2000 and 3000 deliveries per year. The Royal Brompton Hospital is a postgraduate centre in which adults and children undergo treatment for cardiovascular and respiratory disease. It is situated in South Kensington with the nearest tube station at South Kensington on the District and Circle Line.

The Anaesthetic Department is collectively responsible for anaesthetic services to 5 operating theatres, 3 (soon to become 4) catheter laboratories, the Adult Intensive Care, the Paediatric Intensive Care and the CT and MRI scanning suites. It consists of 8 SpRs, 2 Clinical Fellows, 1-2 Flexible Trainees, 30 ADHs. There are no Non Consultant Career Grades. SpRs currently work a 1:6 on-call rota with prospective cover.

The National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery is a tertiary referral centre for all types of neurosurgery including major vascular, spinal, surgery to the craniocervical and skull base. There is an active intervention radiology department. There are two intensive care units and one high dependency unit. The Neuromedical intensive care unit has 6 beds and the neurosurgical unit has 8 beds. There is a regular teaching for the trainees in the department and an active research programmes.

Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children NHS Trust is a postgraduate teaching hospital with 351 beds, and is a national centre for children with a wide spectrum of disease. The full range of medical, surgical and diagnostic specialities are available.

There are 19 Specialist Registrars. 16 are appointed for one  year, 15 posts are rotational appointments with other hospitals and one post is reserved for overseas trainees. Three further trainees are appointed for three months, two from UCLH and one from The Royal Hospitals Trust.

More than 10,000 children are anaesthetised annually, including general and neonatal surgery, cardiothoracic surgery including transplantation, interventional and investigational imaging, genito-urinary and renal transplantation, plastic, orthopaedic and spinal surgery, opthalmic, ENT and maxillofacial and craniofacial surgery.

The Paediatric Pain Control Service manages acute and chronic pain on an in-patient and out-patient basis. A majority of the trainees will undertake a full three month training programme in the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit.
